The operating system that aligns HR, Marketing and Communication.
The Employer Brand OS Canvas at a glance
“What’s your next play after LinkedIn?”
The Sales Director, at the final interview of my LinkedIn hiring process
I was aiming for that role, and he was already asking what would come next. I answered on instinct, but that question stayed with me for over ten years: in a single line it held an entire vision of the relationship between a company and its people. Professionals to grow, even beyond the company itself: a path that should still leave a mark.
This book gives that answer a structure. And, in the end, it passes the same question on to you.
The difference rarely lies in a slogan. It lies in the concrete experience people live every day and in the credibility with which leaders and teams make that promise real. I wrote this book to give this question a structured answer.
It is your reputation. It exists anyway, whether you tend to it or not, because people form an opinion either way.
It is the intentional work by which you align that reputation with reality: culture, leadership, communication, EVP. And it is exactly this work that my book guides you through.
I designed this book as a practical playbook and adopted the Golden Circle by Simon Sinek as an operating workflow: decisions start from the why, align the how and clarify the what. Two tools form its backbone. The first is the Employer Brand OS Canvas: a single map on which HR, Marketing and Communication design the employer brand together, from why to what by way of how. The second is the Personal Brand OS Canvas: the same architecture, redrawn at the individual level. Because a strong employer brand comes to life through people able to tell it with authenticity and consistency, from leaders to every single employee.
And since a map is only useful if you know where you are, each canvas comes with its own maturity scorecard: the Employer Brand OS Scorecard and the Personal Brand OS Scorecard, two diagnostic tools that answer the most honest question of all, «where are we?», and turn intuition into a measurable starting point.
The numbers on the blocks show the suggested order of completion: start from the Vision (1) and close with the System Metrics (12).
What we do and why we exist
Which principles guide our choices even when they come at a cost?
Who are we? What do people really say? The concrete experience of employees, candidates and alumni.
Talent Segments
Who do we want to attract, retain, re-activate? Profiles, generations, key skills?
How do we operate? Behaviours and rituals
How do we work? Which rituals and leadership styles make the purpose real every day?
Employee Advocacy & Community
The 3 levels: employees to alumni to talent prospects. Who are the ambassadors, and under which rules?
Proof Pack
Employee Value Proposition
What do we offer uniquely? In identity language, not recruiting-brochure language.
External Narrative
What story do we tell the market? How do employer, corporate and consumer brand align?
Channels & Touchpoints
Where and how does the story reach candidates, employees and alumni? Career site, LinkedIn, events?
E.g. % of managers trained, advocacy content cadence
E.g. internal engagement, eNPS, EVP consistency
E.g. quality of hire, retention, employer brand reach
Here too the numbers show the suggested order of completion, from the Vision (1) to the System Metrics (12).
What do you do and why? What is your specific contribution: what do you solve, transform or generate for others?
Who are you according to others? What do colleagues, clients and collaborators really say about you?
What truly guides you? Which non-negotiable principles surface in your decisions, even when they cost?
Who do you speak to, in which ecosystem? Who are the other players, and what makes your point of view original?
How do you work and behave? What is your distinctive approach: visible rituals and habits that define you?
How do you amplify your thinking? What content do you produce, at what cadence and in what distinctive voice?
What do you offer uniquely? Not a list of skills, but the concrete benefit for those who work with you.
What story do you tell? Personal, professional and digital brand must align.
Where do you reach your audience? You do not need to be everywhere: which channel can you own consistently?
E.g. content published, people met, hours of training
E.g. engagement, inbound requests, follower growth
E.g. opportunities generated, offers, invitations, mentions
You can start anywhere, but I designed the book as a journey: define, build, bring to life, enable, measure.
Where employer branding comes from and how it has changed alongside the labour market. I retrace the origins and evolution of the concept, use the Bersin Talent Management Maturity Model to understand what stage your organisation is really at, apply the Golden Circle to the employer brand, from WHY to WHAT, and arrive at the Employer Brand OS Canvas: the tool that holds the whole system together on a single page.
The heart of the company promise. I analyse the components of an effective EVP, how to ensure consistency between declared values and real culture, and the research and validation methods to build it not in a vacuum but on the voices of those who live the company. Then I put the employer brand to the ESG test: People Identity as the social dimension of sustainability, and the opposite risks of greenwashing and greenhushing: saying too much, or saying too little.
How you bring an employer brand to life every day, through three levers that play together. The score of internal communication, which sets the rhythm and aligns; the choir of employee experience and communities, where the promise becomes lived experience; the echo of employee advocacy, when people themselves carry the company voice outward, with a credibility no official channel can replicate.
An employer brand also passes through the people who embody it. I introduce the Personal Brand OS Canvas and its maturity scorecard to give structure to professional reputation, and show how to involve leadership as credible thought leaders: not corporate megaphones, but authentic voices that build trust inside and outside the organisation.
Without measurement, employer branding stays a gamble. I present the three-level measurement model, from perception to engagement to business impact, the Proof Pack to document results with evidence, and the Board Pack: the summary to bring into the boardroom, to turn the employer brand from an HR topic into a leadership conversation.
